The full-size trucks in the large pickup segment are designed with utility in mind. Each offers a variety of engine choices (including hybrid or diesel power), a selection of driveline options, and cabin configurations to accommodate up to 6 passengers. Compared to their predecessors of a decade ago, these modern and innovative workhorses with the latest in technology are also very comfortable to drive.
The 2009 Large Pickups Buyer’s Guide is a compiled list of the top-performing full-size pickups from J.D. Power and Associates three key automotive studies. The studies include the 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), the 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, and the 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS). In addition, we have also noted any models in the guide that have earned “5-star” crash test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), or have been chosen as “Top Safety Picks” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). All models are listed alphabetically by manufacturer.
2009 Chevrolet Avalanche
First introduced in 2002, the Chevrolet Avalanche is a 4-door, 5-passenger sport utility pickup sharing a basic platform with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban. The Avalanche offers the unique combination of an enclosed cab with a “midgate” separating passengers from an open cargo bed in the rear of the vehicle. Now in its second generation (last redesigned for 2007), the Chevrolet Avalanche offers two different 5.3-liter V-8 engines (flex-fuel or gasoline) or a 6.0-liter V-8. All are mated to an all-new 6-speed automatic transmission. The standard gasoline engine earned EPA fuel economy ratings of 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. In our 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, designed to measure consumer delight with the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles, the Chevrolet Avalanche ranked highest in its segment. It also performed well in our 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS), the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership. In that study, the Avalanche ranked among the top three models in its segment. In government crash testing, the Chevrolet pickup earned “5-star” crash test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Chevrolet Avalanche receives a new standard 6-speed automatic transmission for 2009. In addition, it benefits from updated OnStar, new XM satellite radio with NavTraffic, new Bluetooth connectivity, and more. Several new colors have also been announced for 2009.
