This guide is a compiled list of the top-performing 2008-model year large premium cars in J.D. Power and Associates’ key automotive research studies. The studies include the 2007 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), the 2007 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, and the 2007 Initial Quality Study (IQS). All models are listed alphabetically by manufacturer.

Audi A8: Competing head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7 Series, the 5-passenger Audi A8 differentiates itself with an aluminum space-frame construction. Available in both the standard A8 model and the long-wheelbase A8 L, the lightweight chassis increases fuel economy and structural rigidity for a better ride, according to the manufacturer. As with its German competitors, the A8 offers the choice between 8- or 12-cylinder power (the engine is a W-12). In addition, Audi offers a powerful V-10 engine in the high-performance S8. All are mated to Audi’s quattro permanent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. In standard trim, the Audi A8 earned EPA fuel-economy estimates of 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway. In the 2007 IQS, which measures problems experienced by buyers after 90 days of ownership, the Audi A8 ranked highest in its segment. For 2008, Audi recalibrated the steering, improved soundproofing, and made several additional cosmetic and accessory changes to their flagship model.

BMW 7 Series: BMW’s flagship model is the luxurious 7 Series. Available in either standard or long-wheelbase models, the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) 7 Series is equipped with standard V-8 power or an optional 12-cylinder powerplant. Large enough to seat up to 5 passengers in road-isolated comfort, the largest BMW sedan also serves as the company’s technology showcase featuring options such as a thermal-imaging camera to help avoid collisions with pedestrians or animals. The standard 7 Series, the 750i, earned EPA fuel-economy estimates of 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway. Consumers have been very satisfied with the design, content, layout, and performance of the 7 Series, as evident in its top-three ranking in the 2007 APEAL study. The 2008 model year added an ultra high-performance Alpina B7 model to the lineup.

Lexus LS: When it first debuted in the large premium luxury class in 1990, the flagship Lexus sedan broke new ground in terms of styling, design and refinement. Nearly two decades later, the Lexus LS 460 continues to build upon that award-winning foundation started by its predecessor. A traditional rear-wheel-drive sedan with seating for 5 passengers, the Lexus LS 460 is available in standard or long-wheelbase models, and with either V-8 (EPA 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway) or hybrid (EPA 20 mpg city/22 mpg highway) powerplants. All LS models feature the latest innovative technologies for passenger comfort and safety. The full-size Lexus LS ranked among the top three models in its segment in both the 2007 APEAL study as well as the 2007 IQS. For 2008, Lexus added an air suspension option on the LS 460 L model, and a new exterior color.

Lincoln Town Car: One of the most traditional cars on the road, the Lincoln Town Car is the last American luxury car utilizing body-on-frame construction (the primary reason most limousines are built on Town Car platforms). With V-8 power under its hood, the largest Lincoln sedan seats up to 6 passengers within its spacious cabin. The EPA fuel-economy estimates for the RWD Lincoln Town Car are 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway. In the 2007 VDS, which measures problems experienced by original owners of three-year-old vehicles, the Town Car ranked among the top three models in its segment. In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Town Car earned 5-star ratings for front passengers in frontal-impact testing. The 2008 model year saw Lincoln remove most of the options by consolidating them and making most of the equipment standard. In addition, the exterior colors have been updated.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class: The flagship S-Class sedan from Mercedes-Benz luxuriously accommodates up to 5 passengers in a cabin swathed with high-quality leathers, woods, and polished metals. Loaded with innovative technology, and excellent isolation from road noise, Mercedes reports that it is the best-selling luxury sedan in the world. The 4-door model is offered with several different engine choices, including a twin-turbo 12-cylinder. With the 8-cylinder engine in the S550, the EPA fuel-economy estimates are 14 mpg city/21 mpg highway. The S-Class ranked highest in segment in the 2007 APEAL study. For the 2008 model year, Mercedes-Benz added a high-performance S63 AMG model that boasts a 6.3-liter, 518-hp powerplant.
