If you absolutely must have a Hummer, the new H3 is the common-sense choice. Hummer, which is a General Motors division, started off with the mammoth H1, but added a smaller H2 model for 2002. Now, the smaller-yet H3 has joined the group. Evolved from GM's midsize truck platform, the H3 is the first Hummer offered with a manual transmission. Hummer claims that the H3, which is equipped with underbody shielding, can ford 20 inches of water at 20 mph and climb 16-inch vertical steps. Its 37-foot turning circle is said to be comparable to a compact car.
